Author's Interview with Andrew Parry.
First, before we move forward with our Author's Interview, I would like to start with an introduction.
1. Could you please introduce yourself to us?
I am a young man in my sixties who has retired from my working life to follow my passion of writing. I have done many things in my life and have travelled to many countries around our beautiful planet. I am passionate about learning many new different things from writing to alternate energy to unexplained phenomena to music, art, politics, culture and technology. I love learning so much now that I research and write about all these things.
2. Congratulations on your book. So what inspired you to write this book?
I have loved movies since my childhood, growing up to the adventures of Robin Hood, Prince Valiant, The Three Musketeers, The lord of the Rings and the tragedies and comedies of William Shakespeare. I have always wanted to make my own movies but that didn't happen. My love of movies and learning has inspired me to write books for screenwriters and writers in general. During this writing process, I am learning how to write stories and screenplays myself.
3. What is the book all about?
The Art of Storytelling is about how to tell a story. Stories are an important part of being human. Stories have passed down through the generations for thousands of years going back to the beginning of language itself. So, I research all the ingredients that make up a good story. From characters, themes, settings, conflict, dialogue, and action to the structure of telling a story like - the hero's journey, the three act structure, to the language used and the conception of ideas and plotting the story from beginning to end.
4. Why did you choose this genre for your book?
My love of learning and desire to tell my own stories compelled me to write this book and others so I can write great screenplays myself.
5. How much time did it take to complete this book?
This book was put together from other books I have written. You could say it is the culmination of many other books I have read and written. The concepts described in this book have been circulating in my mind for many years.
6. What makes your Book Special?
I think this book is special because it brings together so many facets of storytelling. I don't like to miss anything, my logical mind urges me to be accurate and concise, looking at each subject from the macro to the micro - from the big picture down to the smallest details.
7. When is your second book coming?
This is not my first book. Over the years I have written a number of books on subjects in this area of writing guides for novel and screenwriters.
8. While writing did you get any writer's block? What is the Tip that you will give others who are facing writer's block?
Find the passion in what you are writing about. You have to love your heroes and supporting characters. You have to know how and why your protagonist becomes the hero. Know that your antagonist will eventually get his or her deserved punishment. Believe in Justice for your characters and your readers will too.
9. What are your other hobbies besides being a talented author?
I play guitar and sing with musician friends as well as working with intellectually disabled people doing music therapy.
10. Last but not the least, How did you feel, while giving this interview?
I am normally introverted and not very comfortable about talking about myself, but I am grateful for this opportunity to reveal my shy self.
