This is the first installment in an intriguing series, and it delivers everything a great mystery should. The story kicks off with a bang when a young woman collapses next to Jack Ludefance and whispers, “Mister, can you help me?” before falling dead. From that moment on, I was hooked.

The highlight of this book is the meticulous attention to detail. The author masterfully crafts a suspenseful investigation filled with unexpected twists and chilling discoveries. The characters are well-developed, and the interactions, especially the interrogations with lawyers, FBI and face-offs with suspects, are incredibly gripping. 

One aspect I particularly loved was the growth of the characters, especially Jack Ludefance. The mix of emotional and family challenges he faces adds depth to his character. The romantic encounters, background stories, and realistic dialogue, also an alligator as a pet, all contribute to making this book a page-turner.

The author’s ability to weave in elements like drug smuggling, human trafficking, and family dynamics, without overwhelming the reader, is commendable. Every chapter left me eager to see what would happen next. I can’t wait to see which case Jack Ludefance will tackle next!
