Author's Interview with John B. Rosenman.
1. Could you please introduce yourself to us?
I'm a retired English professor who has published two dozen novels and 200 short stories. Most of them are in science fiction and fantasy.
2. Congratulations on your book! What inspired you to write it?
I developed sleep apnea and had three or four of what I call near-death experiences in which I struggled to breathe in my sleep and felt I would die if I didn't manage to wake up. This disease or health problem became so central to my life that I decided to write about it and give my main character each of my experiences. The result, however, is science-fiction fantasy that soon greatly departs from what I've experienced. In a way, my disease was a blessing in disguise, for it provided the spark for my imagination.
3. What is your book about?
Michael Windsor, the main character, develops sleep apnea and acquires a medical device to treat his condition. As a result, he acquires special powers that the Government learns about. Federal agents and scientists are soon after him to study his abilities and harness them for military purposes. He manages to escape, at least temporarily, and finds a new woman to love and the hope of a better life. But can he achieve it?
4. Why did you choose this genre for your book?
I tend to write science-fiction fantasy. It's part of my nature. In a way, I did not choose this genre. This genre chose me.
5. How long did it take you to complete the book?
About nine months. I have a beta reader, and I worked closely with her chapter by chapter.
6. What makes your book special?
I may be wrong, but I don't know of any other novel or science-fiction novel that has dealt with the subject of sleep apnea and what a person suffering from it goes through. Also, I think A Breath of Fresh Air provides the readers with a wild, imaginative ride. Spoiler Alert: Michael's device is like no other machine you've ever encountered. Read my novel and see.
7. When can we expect your next book?
I'm working on a sequel to this one. Its title: Every Breath I Take. I hope to see it published in a year or two.
8. Did you experience writer’s block while writing? What advice would you give to others who face it?
I don't recall that I did. For those who suffer from WB, keep writing. If that doesn't work, try writing an outline. If that fails, ask a friend or join a writers' group. For twenty years, I belonged to such a group, and their input and suggestions helped me to create and polish my best works.
9. Besides being a talented author, what are your other hobbies?
I love to play tennis, especially doubles. In addition, I like to read and interact with other authors. I love movies, especially (you guessed it) science-fiction and fantasy ones. Also, I'm drawn to horror and sports movies. I'm a fan of boxing as a sport, and I'm interested in scientific developments and Artificial Intelligence.
10. Last but not least, how did you feel during this interview?
