Author's Interview with David Block.
1. Could you please introduce yourself to us?
I’m a graphic designer and educator with over 30 years of experience in the design industry. For the past decade, I’ve taught high school graphic design at El Dorado High School in Placentia, California, where I’ve had the privilege of helping students discover their creative potential.
2. Congratulations on your book! What inspired you to write it?
My passion for design and education inspired me to write The Dragon Codex: Quest for the Relics, which combines my love for storytelling and graphic design in a way that introduces young readers to the fundamentals of design through an exciting fantasy adventure.
3. What is your book about?
In The Dragon Codex: Quest for the Relics of Design, young dragons Draco, Lumi, and Arka are thrust into a race against time to save their world of Draconia from a looming creative darkness. As legendary relics tied to the essence of graphic design vanish, creativity across the realm begins to fade. To restore balance, the dragonlets must seek out the hidden secrets of famous designers such as Paula Scher, Saul Bass, and Gail Anderson.
Their journey takes them through magical lands filled with puzzles, challenges, and danger, where every obstacle requires not just bravery but creative thinking. Along the way, they learn valuable lessons in design while forming unbreakable bonds of friendship.
With interactive elements like design exercises and a glossary of terms woven into the adventure, The Dragon Codex offers young readers a unique blend of fantasy and real-world design concepts. It’s more than just an exciting story—it’s an educational tool that inspires creativity and shows kids the power of imagination and perseverance.
4. Why did you choose this genre for your book?
Middle-grade and Young Adult Fantasy
5. How long did it take you to complete the book?
1.5 years
6. What makes your book special?
What sets The Dragon Codex apart is its dual role as an adventure and an educational tool. While navigating the fantasy world of Draconia, young readers also absorb key graphic design lessons, making this story both entertaining and enriching.
This book is deeply personal to me, as it’s dedicated to my daughter, Jordan Kaitlyn Block, whose memory is honored through the mystical Ring of Aqureil, a vital part of the story. My hope is that this tribute adds emotional depth to the narrative and resonates with readers.
As a graphic designer with 34 years of experience and a high school graphic design teacher for 10 years, I have a passion for blending creativity and education. I believe The Dragon Codex will inspire young readers to explore their own artistic potential and see the magic in their creativity.
7. When can we expect your next book?
I would like to have book two out this time next year.
8. Did you experience writer’s block while writing? What advice would you give to others who face it?
Of course, it happens. I think every writer faces it at some point. For me, I worked with a ghostwriter whenever I felt like I couldn't get past a certain part or if I just couldn’t find the right way to convey the emotion I wanted. It was really helpful to have someone there to brainstorm with, to bounce ideas off of, and push through those moments where I got stuck. My advice? Don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh set of eyes—or just a little distance—to get back into the flow.
9. Besides being a talented author, what are your other hobbies?
I've been a graphic designer for 32 years so that's always been a passion of mine whether for a client or for a personal passion project. I'm the host of a YouTube podcast called "The Design Rescue Show" where I interview creative professionals about their career journeys.
10. Last but not least, how did you feel during this interview?
Thank you so much for having me today. I've felt great during this interview. I'm so happy you've given me this chance to share my new book with you and your audience.
